WCEC Injunction Hearing & Unit 3 Permit Hearing The Palm Beach County Environmental Coalition has been granted a hearing for an injunction to halt consturction on West County Energy Center. The federal lawsuit is set to be heard in February, but it has appeared that the closer our legal battle gets, the faster FPL seems to be working.. The injunction hearing will take place on October 6th at 2pm at the Federal Courthouse in downtown West Palm beach. On October 27th, there will be Public DEP Hearing on WCEC's unit 3: 12pm at the Wellington Community Center, 12165 W. Forest Hill Blvd. The PBCEC will host a rally out front at 11am to let people know that the hearing is happening. EEF! Caught on Video! Everglades Earth First! has now joined the YouTubin' world. FPL Protest Trials Update The restitution hearing in the case of eight of the activists arrested at the February 18th direct action against the West County Energy Center was won in our favor! The Judge decided that those eight were not liable for the over $20,000 in restitution to the county sherriff's office that the state attorney's office was seeking. Sentencing for the four activists in the August 11th trial was postponed again, this time until October 31st due to the state calling in forty-one officers to testify for restitution as part of the sentencing. The next round of trials set for October 20th was postponed til December. For more information on the trials, please see the FPL Trials page.

On
October 7, the Broward County Commission approved the
proposed rezoning of 42 acres of wetlands and rockland hardwood
hammock into a Lowe's store. The Coconut Creek City Commission
unanimously ignored overwhelming community opposition to approve
the project, but the final decision rests with the county commission.. 
On
September 20th, around 70 South Floridians stood
up in defense
of our dying ecosystem and made our voices heard. We met at
Stormwater Treatment Area 1 East in Western Palm Beach County,
a fancy name for a recreation of nature's natural wetland filtration
system. About a dozen of the ralliers had arrived by bicycle, after
an energetic 18 mile group ride. After a rousing rally, we marched
to the entrance
of FPL's West County Energy Center construction site inside the
Palm Beach Aggregates rock mine, a spot which contains two of
the greatest threats to the Everglades ecosystem.
